Casablanca Steps

Pictures of the four musicians

Friday 19th October 2018 at 7:30pm

Pictures of the four musiciansOne of the most experienced and established 1920's / 30's musical acts in Europe, The Casablanca Steps are four individual and talented performers unequalled in their field who recreate the authentic musical ambience of the 1920's and 30's when the “Charleston” was all the rage and the swells were “Putting On The Ritz”.

Their performance is world class with over 40 TV shows throughout the UK and Europe to their credit. They have entertained at festivals, theatres, cruise lines and private parties globally with great acclaim. They have rubbed shoulders with celebrities and Royalty, being personal favourite of Prince Philip after their performance for him at St James Palace, London. Their totally unique sound and authentic three part vocal harmonies, combined with a quintessentially English visual element of serious “tongue in cheek" humour make their show a unique experience for all ages.

Indulge in an evening with Wooten, Clarke, Edwardo and Pico - four great performers who really know how to entertain.

TROPIKAL VIZIONS STEEL BAND

Friday 16th March 2018 at 7.30 pm

Tropikal Vizions Band

“Tropikal Vizions have been sharing their unique sounds of the Caribbean around the world for many years… enjoyed by anyone and everyone even if they are not musically minded....It is the youngest instrument in the world……originated in Trinidad ….

.... we have shared our unique sound with passengers on P&O CARIBBEAN CRUISE LINERS for many years and we would love to share our authentic music with you”  - Evers Powell.

The steel drum is an idiophone traditionally made from an old oil drum, but today from high quality steel. The bottom of the oil drum was first pounded into a bowl, then shaped with hammers to form distinct resonating surfaces.

It did originate from Trinidad in the 1930s and locally the drums are called pans, and the players, pannists.  Winston ‘Spree’ Simon of the John Steel Band is credited with making the first Pan, and in 1946 had an audience with the Governor and performed Ave Maria and God save the King!

The band play a range of styles from traditional island songs, to recent pop songs, as well as reggae, bringing a real taste of the Caribbean to the evening.  You might like to find a colourful shirt or top with bright Caribbean colours to wear, or perhaps you have a straw or sun hat and we will come up with some cocktails so that you can sit back, relax, and dream that you are on cruise ship.

As Evers said to me “we like to make people feel happy and enjoy themselves”.

Don’t think I can add to that! But look forward to seeing you on our Caribbean Evening.

Tickets £12 Adults/£6 children available from Burway Books, John Thomas Florist, or C.S. Town Council or on line here.

Little Rmba band in Cafe Perido

Little Rumba, one of the most popular bands of the Marches, is well known for not only their originality but also their humour and a unique blend of styles.

John Hymas, (violin, viola and accordion) founder member of Hoover the Dog, Pete Mustill (singer and Guitarist) led formation of the Tango Band, and also joined with Hugh Colvin to gain top third album in the Czech charts! Hugh is the bands saxophonist producing exciting material, and Jacqui Savage stimulating bass player who has worked with a series of border bands.

For this concert they will be joined by fabulous Welsh singer and song writer Jess Hall who also features on their latest album “Café Perido” as well as performing with the band “Poisson Rouge” on their video.

The band write all their own music and over the years have developed a recognizable house style owing debts to East European to South America as well as jazz and blues. In fact when I heard Poisson Rouge being played, I could hear shades of Sidney Bechet playing the haunting Petit Fleur, which was being played all over Paris in the Summer of ‘58, where I stayed for a few days when hitch-hiking through France.

So we are really looking to this our final gig for this Spring but we hope to see you all again in September when we launch our Autumn Programme.

Tickets £10 available from John Thomas Florist, Burway Books, or C.S. Town Council Office or online at bit.ly/shi-events.

This is the perfect start to the Christmas Season.

The Carnival Band with an exciting array of unusual instruments

‘Those classy exponents of early English music, the Carnival Band.’ (The Guardian)

‘The Carnival Band – aka Henry VIII’s Rock ‘n Roll band – created glorious chaos at the Courtyard, delighting a full house in the process. (Hereford Times)

Come and enjoy an evening of seasonal music from one of our best-loved early music folk bands.

With their unique approach, medieval and folk carols played on ancient and modern instruments plus “a cappella” harmony and new songs add a contemporary take on Christmas. They are hugely popular with audiences.

From Medieval England to ‘le jazz cool’ via Latin rhythms and Cajun beats, these five musicians move effortlessly from one musical genre to another adding a sprinkling of rock, world music and theatricality for extra flavour.

They have over twenty different musical instruments ranging from the vibrant blare of the Shawms, Bagpipes and Electric Guitar to the seductive tones of the Turkish Clarinet and fiddle to the enchanting delicacy of the renaissance Cittern.

“Full of vivacity, originality and wit” ........     BBC Stoke and Staffs

“The band is terrific” ........ Lancashire Evening Post

Richard Stark and Andrew Hubbard

“Classical Singer Richard Stark and friends bring you an eclectic mix of Opera, Musical Theatre, Classical Rock, Greek Cypriot Folk and Jazz. Settle down for a lively evening combining sublime music with witty banter and a few surprises”

One Saturday morning a couple of years ago, I was walking across the Square in Shrewsbury, and I became aware of a superb voice around which a crowd had gathered to listen. The voice belonged to Richard Stark. I knew then we needed to hear this man at the Silvester Horne!

Richard is a classically trained singer from Trinity College of Music and Morley Opera in London, and sings regularly in Opera and concerts throughout the Country having performed in such diverse venues such as the Orient Express to Glastonbury Festival.

Jill NeenanJill Neenan singer, gained a BA honours degree in Music and Drama from the University of Warwick, and has performed as a Principal Soloist at the London Palladium as well leading rolls in Musical Theatre and Operetta. She is an accomplished Choir Master and head of Music at a Private school.

Andrew Hubbard, pianist/violinist trained at the Royal Academy of Music, and is an accomplished performer and accompanist whose West End credits include 1st keyboards on Phantom, as well as many Concerts and Recitals here and in Europe.

“Even the onset of rain at the end of the Concert failed to dampen the crowds’ spirit as Richard’s magnificent voice echoed across Bridlington Bay”. - Myles Bacon, East Riding Council.

A Celebration of Simon and Garfunkel

Monochrome Image: Tim Chu and Ian Bailey in concert

Friday 20th October 2017 at 7.30 pm

Monochrome Image: Tim Chu and Ian Bailey in concertWe are pleased to welcome singer songwriters Tim Chu and Ian Bailey who will be performing “A Celebration of Simon & Garfunkel” billed by the BBC “as the UK’s leading non tribute show currently dazzling live music lovers throughout the UK.”

Tim Chu has been a professional session musician for many years, and his music features in TV, Film and Radio. He has loved the music of Paul Simon from a young age as the original LPs were rarely off his parents’ record player!
Tim had the vision to put together the show and joined with Lancashire born Ian Bailey to complete the duo.

Ian has been a singer songwriter for many years, with three critically acclaimed solo albums of his own material. They blend in their own unique way, without falling into the tribute act category. Two great musicians performing some of Simon & Garfunkel’s classic songs in an intimate and relaxed way.

Lifelong friend of Ian, Shropshire singer/songwriter Gary Hall, who now lives in Church Stretton, says “We have been close friends and worked together in the studio for several years on various projects. When Ian first told me about show that he was embarking on with Tim I knew that it would be something special, knowing the quality of musicianship from both artists. I’m thrilled they have chosen the Silvester Horne as their Shropshire debut, don’t miss the show folks!”

“Everyone loves the music of Simon &Garfunkel and for me no one has created it better than Tim and Ian, the concert simply blew me away” Phil Cool, TV comedian, impressionist, and musician.
